Growing out of an ocean-ice observing experiment in Nares Strait that started in 2003, a group of scientists from Canada, England, Denmark, and the USA noticed that between Aug.-3 and Aug.-5 of 2010 an exceptionally large piece of ice broke off Petermann Glacier, Greenland. MODIS satellite imagery reveals the event with digital data that were processed at the University if Delaware from raw L0 to intermediate L1B data gridded to the location. This event took place about 3 weeks after our group submitted a manuscript entitled "Ocean Circulation and Properties in Petermann Fjord, Greenland" for peer review that has since been published (.pdf). This work and web-site is supported by the National Science Foundation award 1022843 with an educational (2011) and logistical (2012) supplement.
